The Lester B. Pearson Award was first introduced on March 10, 1971 by the NHL players association. The award was created in honor of the late Lester B. Pearson. Mr. Pearson was a well known hockey enthusiast and a former Prime Minister of Canada.
This award is presented annually by the NHL players association to the National Hockey League?s outstanding player. The award recipient is chosen through a annual vote of NHLPA membership.
On June 19, 1996 the NHLPA presented a newly sculpted award which would replace the original trophy.
